As a final project for my Advertising Design course, we were to concept a magazine, complete with cover, table of contents, letter from the editor, a colophon, a two page spread, and a three page spread (not all included here). My intense love of travel made “Junket Junkie: For The Eternal Wanderluster” a no-brainer, and also a really great nickname! All of the images used are from royalty-free sites, and all copyrights to their respective owners.
This was a project that was really driven by process rather than a vision for a final product, and where it derives a lot of its meaning for me. I created a typographic self-portrait using twelve descriptors, six of which would be generally categorized as positive and six negative. The act of typing each and every word in the piece (read: absolutely no copy+paste whatsoever) served as a way of me “saying” each of these things about myself. I learned very quickly that the words seemed to have virtually no meaning anymore - the positives no longer making feel better about myself and the negatives no longer stinging to accept every time. After this project, I always try and remind myself that the things we say about ourselves are only that and it’s up to us to live up to the meaning of those words.
